From Plateau to Packhorse

A circular walk from the Plateau above Southstoke down into the Cam Valley via the Fosse Way (the Roman road from Exeter to Lincoln).  The walk combines great views, picturesque scenery and plenty of historic interest from Roman times to the present day.  With an opportunity to finish the walk at the recently restored Packhorse community pub in Southstoke, there should be something for everyone on this walk. Start: Cross Keys Inn, Combe Down BA2 5RZ and finishes at the Packhorse Inn, Southstoke BA2 7DU. (The Cross Keys is a further 500m along Southstoke Lane.) Buses (3,3A, D2 & X67) run regularly from the town centre to the Cross Keys. This 6.5 mile walk is along Public Footpaths, Bridleways and through fields.  Some walking along lanes.  One long descent but mostly flat with one ascent towards the end into Southstoke. Could be muddy in places if wet. Stout footwear is advised.  Some stiles and steps.  As there may be livestock in the fields, dogs are not permitted on this walk. The walk will take 3.5 to 4 hours and is led by Tim Sheppard and Jenny John. The walk is part of the Bathscape Walking Festival.
