Teaching maths effectively at Key Stage 3, Inspiration Trust Curriculum Centre, Monday, 03. December 2018

About the course
Over recent decades we have made huge strides in our understanding of human memory. Learning about these discoveries can help your pupils learn faster, understand better, and remember for longer.
This course will build understanding of a basic model of memory and show why this means that a direct instruction model of deliberate practice is the best way to acquire expertise in mathematics. It will also present Bjork’s New Theory of Disuse and the interleaving effect.
These are high-impact approaches which will make a significant difference even in the final months before GCSE mathematics examinations. Attendees will take away two major theories about learning and memory, knowledge of how these work for mathematics teaching and strategies for applying these in order to optimise final few months of Year 11 teaching.
Who should attend?
All maths teachers; leaders and line managers of maths teachers.

David Thomas is principal at Jane Austen College in Norwich.
