TastEd-Learning Language through Food
The TastEd team wants to build a generation of children who have a wider palate for healthy foods, particularly fruit and vegetables, forging positive relationships with food and their own bodies. With the Sapere method children learn to respond to a variety of different foods with their five senses and expand their language to enable them to articulate their likes and dislikes. Those teaching the TastEd programme have witnessed immediate and tangible benefits from the lessons, with children seeking out and enjoying a wider range of foods than before.
A recent TastEd lesson taught at St Matthew’s primary school in Cambridge by teacher Ruth Platt used different coloured tomatoes to show Reception children that even if they may not like one variety, there are plenty of others to choose from. Some children thought that a small orange tomato looked like an ant’s egg and others compared a yellow tomato to a lantern and a big red beef tomato to a football. Ruth said she has been amazed to see how well children engage with new foods through the TastEd lessons. TastEd equips children with new sensory tools for trying foods that they do not like. Children who are reluctant to try new foods are told that they can smell or **** them instead.
A further aim is that TastEd supports the national curriculum in PSHE/PSED as children are encouraged to understand that not everyone likes the same foods, but we can all respect each other’s different tastes.
