SPEEDY SWIMMING - 10 x Southsea Open Water Sea Swim Squad Training Sessions, PO4 0SP, Saturday, 08. August 2020
About this Event
During the summer the weekly squad sessions will be run as open water sea swim coaching at Southsea beach in Portsmouth, 9.45am - 11am on Saturdays.
These sessions will have to be limited to a maximum of 10 swimmers plus myself coaching for now, under CIMPSA, Swim England and government guidelines. This is also in agreement with British Triathlon and the STA (Swim Teachers Association) guidelines and from my insurance company. I'll be teaching in the water and on the beach.
To ensure your place, please book via this link beforehand so I know who's attending. Please save this in your online calendar. If more than 10 people from the group wish to join on a regular basis, then I will organise a second session afterwards.
We will meet 9.45am South Sea Beach, next to the RNLI station (to the left of the pier as you look out to sea). Postode PO4 0SP. We'll be swimming between the red and yellow flagged area. Please ensure you're changed and ready on the beach, for a safety briefing about current conditions, mobility and warm session pre-swim, and outlining the session format. The sessions will be following covid-19 safety guidelines.
These sessions will obviously be weather dependant but I'm hoping to run these weekly until the end of the lifeguarded season. I have been advised by Portsmouth Vountary Lifeguard Service that if there is a strong south easterly wind from force 4-6 and above then it will be necessary to cancel the open water swim session for safety reasons.
In addition to the weekly open water squad sessions, I'm planning on continuing the online zoom core strength swim session with exercise, swim bands, and bodyweight strength once a week on a Tuesday evening at the normal time. Thursday zoom classes will discontinue from this time with the last one being held on Thursday 9th July 2020.
It would be great to see you all, and for you all to have a swim (all be it socially distanced) and be together again.
The area where we'll swim is in a lifeguarded area, which my insurance stipulated, with a lifeguard who has a national vocational beach lifeguard qualification. For info there are no deep channels, tidal reach isn't that much and it's a sandy beach once you go out a bit further. There's parking along the seafront in front of the pier.
Examples of coaching sessions at Southsea would include:
- Interval based swim sessions
- Using stroke counting for distance
- Improving and understanding stroke rate for sea swimming
- Entry and exit techniques from and into the beach,
- Understanding currents, tides and drift and how to use them better
- Sighting and navigation in the sea (quite different to a lake)
- Drafting (when allowed)
- Mass start techniques and options for events
- Wading and dolphining for running into the sea prior to swimming
- Kicking and the 6 reasons it's needed for sea swimming
- Improving all elements of sea swimming skills and drills and techniques
All of these would be in a progressive plan week on week developing your sea swimming skill set. I really hope you're pleased to hear about the return to group sessions and I do hope that you will join us.
If you have any questions, please get in touch!
I'll look forward to seeing you next weekend!!
