Short Course: Introduction to Seaweed and Seaweed Pressing, The Marine Biological Association, Saturday, 25. April 2020

The UK Coastline is home to a huge diversity of seaweed species. Seaweed is a vital part of shore and shallow sea ecosystems. It is also used in foods, medicine and even your mobile phone! Seaweed pressing not only is a timeless art form, but is vital in recording and preserving and learning about seaweeds.

Course Tutor:
Esther Hughes (The Marine Biological Association) is an expert in botany, specialising in seaweeds (marine macroalgae). She has a wealth of knowledge regarding UK seaweed species and has an infectious enthusiasm for the subject. This is the fourth introductory seaweed course run by Esther at the MBA.
Course Description:
The course will cover the basics of seaweed classification and identification with examination of collected specimens on a local rocky shore and a visit to a nearby shore site. It will include an introduction to the biology and identification of common red, green, and brown species. as well as a lab session identifying collected specimens. Participants will also learn to press and display seaweed specimens and will be given the opportunity to press their own specimens to take home.
Who should attend?
This one-day ‘Introduction to Seaweed’ course caters for those interested in seaweeds at beginner level for art, foraging, science or just personal interest. Also suitable for teachers and marine educators wishing to incorporate seaweed in their lessons and activities. No prior knowledge, training or understanding is required.

Refund Policy: Cancelations received 10 days or more before the event will be refunded in full. Cancelations after this time will be refunded if the place on the course can be filled, otherwise the following will apply: 10 - 5 days before the event will recieve a 50% refund on the total course cost and cancelations received within five days of the event will not automatically be entitled to a refund.
