Safety and vulnerability in everyday life in older age: implications for health and social care practitioners
25 June, 2pm-4pm, Iris Murdoch Building
This half-day seminar presents findings from a study conducted by researchers at the University of Stirling, in collaboration with Ceartas independent advocacy and some of their members who are older people. We worked together to explore:

What ‘safety’ and ‘vulnerability’ mean to older people living in the community who are supported by health and social care services; how important safety is in their lives;
What resources/sources of support older people draw on to manage vulnerability and secure safety; what other factors impact on their safety/vulnerability; and
How improvements might be made in the ways that older people in the community are able to keep and feel safe.

We will present our key findings, and showcase some of the resources we are developing to support training and practice in older people’s services. The findings and resources have relevance to all areas of social care and health services engaged in supporting older people, including (but not limited to) safeguarding/***** support and protection services.
The seminar will be led jointly by the researchers (Dr Fiona Sherwood-Johnson, Kathryn Mackay and Dr Corinne Greasley-Adams) and some of the older people who worked on the study. It is planned to be an interactive event. There will be opportunities to reflect on the findings, debate their implications for practice, give feedback and discuss potential directions for future research. The event is suitable for new and experienced practitioners, and those involved in managing, supervising and supporting practice. Delegates involved in policy-making, research and advocacy are also welcome.
The seminar is located in the University of Stirling’s ground-breaking Dementia Services Development Centre. It is a free event and refreshments will be provided. Please advise us of any special dietary and/or accessibility requirements at the time of booking. We look forward to seeing you there.
