RSPB - Wildlife River Trips, RSPB Havergate Island, Saturday, 19. September 2020

On our Wildlife River Trip you will be joined by an RSPB volunteer guide on October Storm where you will enjoy a 2.5 hour trip on the Alde-Ore Estuary and Butley River looking for waders, gulls and other wildlife such as seals, geese and ducks depending on the time of year you choose to go and enjoy some commentary on the history of the river and surrounding area. The trip will include landing on Havergate Island for around 40 minutes where you will get the chance to look out onto one of our main lagoons and with your guide’s help spot the various species of waders and wildfowl that use the island’s lagoons to feed and rest.
These river trips will offer you a great chance to see the gulls on Havergate during the months of May, June and July when the island is otherwise ‘closed’ to visitors. You can learn a bit more about their behavior and see for yourself how they nest and raise their young. You might even learn to love gulls! Havergate Island is now one of the main breeding sites for large gulls in Suffolk and is an experience in itself.
Out of the breeding season August, September and October you will see a more varied array of birds returning from their breeding grounds and recuperating on the islands lagoons.
The boat will leave Orford Quay at various times for the 2.5 hour trip around the island including landing on Havergate Island for 40 minutes.
Places on these trips are strictly limited because of the small capacity of the boat, so please book early. We recommend stout footwear, sensible clothing, wet weather clothing and sun protection at all times of year.
You need to have a reasonable level of fitness for this trip because it requires getting on and off the boat and walking on uneven and sometimes muddy ground on the island.
There are no refreshments available on the island. Visitors need to bring their own food and drink for these trips. We have one public toilet on the island if needed.
In adverse weather conditions, the trip may be cancelled at short notice at the warden's discretion; in this case, you will get a full refund of your booking fee.
