Rediscovering Beechen Cliff, Laura Place, Monday, 16. September 2019

This two and a half mile walk features great views, paths through fields and woods, hidden corners, steep steps, as well as a few surprises, all within hailing distance of the city centre. Beechen Cliff was once Bath’s top tourist attraction, but its charms have unaccountably faded. Retracing a route taken by Catherine Morland, the heroine of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, this walk sets out to rediscover this once popular excursion. Old maps, prints and photographs will be used to show how much has changed over the last 200 years or so, while the latter part of the walk will reveal how recent conservation work has opened up views and footpaths lost for decades.
Led by Andrew Swift, this walk has steep steps downhill and is muddy in places. It will take 2.5 hours, covering 2.5 miles.
This walk is part of Bathscape Walking Festival.
