PL00107 Introduction to Statistics – Correlation & Simple Regression (DPMA) - ESG Protected Learning (1.279), 1.279, Wednesday, 28. August 2019

This event is for ESG/ONS staff only.
This is a DPMA course aimed at the Practiced level
This course explores correlation and its limitations, the danger of mixing correlation and causation, and simple linear regression (regression with only two variables)
Learning Objectives: Determine the correlation between variables Understand the difference between correlation and causation Use Excel to calculate correlation coefficients Use Excel to visualise the data Use Excel to execute linear regression
Brief Outline of Session:Introduction to correlation and how to think about the dataTed Talk on the dangers of assuming causationExample of “correlation” that does not exist when the graph is extendedIntroduction to Pearson’s correlation coefficientExercise on calculating, and interpreting, the correlation coefficient in ExcelExercise on visualising the data in ExcelLimitations of the correlation coefficientExercise to explore the limitations of the correlation coefficient, in ExcelExplanation of basic linear regression (2 variables)Exercise on basic linear regression in ExcelExploratory exercise in Excel using ONS data
