NQT Primary Development Programme 2019-20, The Maltings, Thursday, 19. September 2019

Retention of teachers has never been a bigger challenge for schools. High quality support for NQTs is crucial in supporting school leaders to overcome this challenge. Our well-established, popular NQT programme ensures that NQTs continue to develop their skills and knowledge to become highly effective and confident practitioners. Key aspects include:

21 hours of taught learning with gap tasks to support effective practice and expert challenge throughout
Supported learning walks, deep subject dives, analysis of pupils’ work and observations of experienced colleagues that enable NQTs to identify and plan for gaps in pupils’ learning by emulating outstanding practice
Using induction time successfully, exploring effective use of NQT/PPA time, and providing opportunities for self-reflection
Engaging pupils through highly effective practice:

-          Using assessment to successfully challenge each learner
-          Developing a highly effective learning environment
-          Refining behaviour management
-          Effective deployment of support staff
-          Communicating with parents
-          Teacher feedback

A focus on inclusion and SEND provision, with visits to primary special schools and supported by a range of inclusion experts
Networking with NQTs across all primary phases

 Dates and programme details:
Session 1: Succeeding in teaching
Thursday 19 September, 9-3:30pm
This will focus on establishing personal goals for the year ahead and shape their own professional learning through induction. Key elements include developing the learning environment, behaviour management and deployment of support staff.
Session 2: Reviewing practice
Thursday 21 November, 9-3:30pm
This second workshop builds on the work introduced in the first session, allowing NQTs to reflect on the impact of their practice and consider their goals for the second term of induction. Elements include effective feedback at the point of learning, professional self-review and gauging their progress and development against the Teachers’ Standards.
Session 3: Effective classroom practice
Thursday 23 January, 9-12noon
Supported lesson observations at partner primary schools will allow NQTs to develop their knowledge and understanding of effective classroom practice in day-to-day contexts. This half-day session provides the opportunity to consider planning, observe the lesson and spend time in debrief meetings with practitioners.
Session 4: Inclusion focus Part 1
Tuesday 17 March, 9-12noon
In the first part of the SEND focus session, NQTs will visit one of Calderdale’s primary special schools. These supported visits provide NQTs with valuable opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding of SEND and the impact of good+ practice.
Session 5: Inclusion focus Part 2
Thursday 19 March, 9-12noon
NQTs are given the opportunity to reflect on their visit to Highbury or Woodbank and consider how mainstream practice can be shaped to meet the needs of children in primary settings. Inclusion specialists with a focus on personalising behaviour management, meeting individual needs through quality first teaching, and multi-agency working, will support the session.
Session 6: Reflection and career development
Thursday 18 June, 9-12noon
NQTs will consider how their teaching has developed over the course of their induction year. This session will emphasise the importance of continued professional development and will consider ways in ensuring CPD has impact in classrooms. The session will also explore the transition from induction to formal appraisal, and look at career pathways and early leadership skills.
