A day of navigation education with an introduction to map reading using our beginners curriculum, and as a bonus you also get a beautifully superb day walk in the New Forest.If you are new to navigation and map reading, want to build confidence in your navigation skills or just want to join us for a great walk with some fascinating and interesting things to see, then this is an ideal place to start.  Our Navigation Education days are held in very high regard and our experience and skills have been featured in a national magazine that we have written a series of navigation articles for. The skills you will learn and practice on this day wil be very valuable to you.On this walk we will cover our introduction to navigation curriculum which covers;• Navigation basics• What’s in a navigation toolkit• Orienting the map to the landscape• Map scales and distances• Taking a bearing• Walking on a bearing• Identifying features on the map and the ground• Identifying features on the map and the ground• An insight into a Grid references• Some very useful navigation hint and tips• Some amazing secret history of the area we will be walking inTrip GradingA walk of approximately 6 miles on mostly level terrain in a forest and open heathland environment. No specific skills are required. The walk distance will vary according to numerous factors. The focus of the day is on navigation training so that will take is not included. We meet at the start point of the walk in the morning. It is a circular walk so we will finish at the same point. Parking is is not included in the trip. It is suggested that you bring a packed lunch and high energy trail snacks, such as flapjacks. Please also ensure that you have enough to drink for the day. Itinerary Arrive at the meeting point for introductions and a briefing of the day. We will then cover some basic map skills before we set off on the walk. The education and training will take place throughout the walk giving you plenty of opportunity to practice the skills covered. The walk is just about 6 miles, we may need to adjust the route accordingly. It usually takes about 6 hours, including stops for lunch and snacks, and stops to discuss for the navigation education and the interesting navigation features that we will see.
