Motherhood & Loss, The Legacy of WW1, Scottish Storytelling Centre, Saturday, 06. October 2018

An afternoon of stories poetry and song exploring the legacy of The First World War with a theme of Motherhood & Loss. As Mothers, Daughters, Storytellers or Songbirds will get the chance to discuss stories and explore your own creative response inspired by the poetry of Joseph Lee (Dundee’s own Black Watch Poet), original artwork by Jan Bee Brown and a special collection of letters from the archives of The National Library of Scotland.
You are invited to bring your own family stories, letters and images to share or perhaps some research about the mother of a soldier, a nurse, a doctor or a volunteer you admire.
Artist and storyteller Jan Bee Brown has worked with communities on a range of creative National Memory projects with The Thrive Archive since 2014. From Falkirk to Gretna and from Leith to Liverpool Jan has helped to uncover the local stories of the gallant local heroes and heroines and how they helped Scotland play its part in The First World War. Inspired by these stories Jan’s artwork has been shown at The Women’s Museum in Bonn and at The Portrait Gallery in London.
Following this creative workshop a selection of participants will be invited to develop, write and perform their own stories or poems for a larger free event at The National Library of Scotland on Saturday 10th November 2018, 2-4 pm. Both these events have been sponsored as part of the Motherhood & Loss initiative @Big Ideas
