Knit and Steek a Bee Cushion or Blanket with Alison Crowther-Smith, Spin A Yarn, Thursday, 10. October 2019

Join us in our award-winning yarn shop in Bovey Tracey for a workshop from inspiring expert teacher and designer Alison Crowther-Smith.
Steeking is a traditional knitting technique which enables you to knit Fairisle in the round, but end up with a flat garment or throw. It is not difficult...it is just a series of logical and really quite easy steps, which Alison will take you through at this event.
This event will take you through her version of steeking. You will use surface crochet (and Alison is not a crochet fan so if she can do it, you can too!). You will learn how to make 100% sure your steek is secure and take away any anxiety you may have about steeking – which is essentially cutting your work in a vertical plane.
You will need to prepare one or two very small Fairisle samples beforehand and bring these with you. You can knit this on the day but you will get a lot more from the workshop if you can knit these ahead. The pattern and full instructions will be sent out well in advance.
On the day, you will learn to first secure the steek; to steek and reinforce your work; to complete your steek in 2 ways: to make a button band finish such as for a cardigan or cushion; and to create a border steek such as for a throw.
In the afternoon, you can cast on a Fairisle project – either the small Bees Cushion, or the bigger Bees Throw, both of which patterns you will be given on the day. This will also mean Alison can teach you her fail-safe two-handed Fairisle technique, if you wish. Alison will share tips and techniques for perfect Fairisle, including stranding, carrying, catching and finishing off.
This event is suitable for reasonably seasoned knitters who want to take their Fairisle to the next level; who want to learn the old and valuable steeking skill; or who may have struggled with steeking before – or maybe have been anxious about it. There is no need to be, this is straightforward and she will give you the confidence that you can do this.
Please bring your own lunch. There are also many local places to buy lunch nearby.
Tea-time treats and refreshments will also be served.
Either book here through Eventbrite, call 01626 836203 or pop into the shop in person.
Workshop attendees receive a discount voucher on the day, valid for one month from the date of the workshop on yarn and accessories.
