Investigatory Powers Act Training - Communications Data, West Yorkshire Police Wakefield District Headquarters, Thursday, 18. July 2019

Acquiring Communications Data under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016

On 5th February 2019 the Communications Data acquisition powers in the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 (IPA) came into force. For a period these powers coexisted alongside RIPA and other legacy powers.
From July 2019 Yorkshire and Humber Police Forces will transition to sole compliance with the IPA.
This training session will provide you with the practical information to enable you as a CD Applicant to perform your role and complete the processes necessary to make an Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) compliant application for the acquisition of Communications Data (CD). It does this by explaining what is different under the IPA as compared to preceding legislation for the acquisition of CD.
Following attendance at this session you will:
•             Understand the key concepts for CD that have changed as a result of the IPA;
•             Considering these changes, you will understand how these affect your business processes for the acquisition of CD and what you need to do to be legally compliant;
•             Understand in detail the processes for the acquisition of CD in the different kinds of operational circumstances you encounter on a day-to-day basis.
Please note: This is not a replacement for training in digital investigations nor does it contain specific training on CD workflow systems (i.e. Charter).
This training is aimed at anyone who regularly applies for & uses Communication Data either via the Urgent Verbal provisions or via Charter however the training would be particularly beneficial to the following groups:

Communications Data Investigators (SPoC’s)

SPoC Managers

Senior Responsible Officers, Authorising Officers & Designated Persons

Digital Media Investigators

TLO’s

Analysts

High volume / Regular CD applicants

The session will approx. 3 hours.
