Introduction to QGIS, The Skiff, Thursday, 28. November 2019

QGIS is a freely available open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) that matches the functionality and usability of commercial products like MapInfo and ArcGIS. It has been adopted by governments, businesses and NGOs around the world.
The course is suitable for beginners to GIS, those looking to refresh their skills, or those looking to migrate to QGIS software. It will enable delegates to visualise, explore and analyse spatial data. The course takes a holistic approach to ensure participants have the skills needed to confidently implement GIS projects in the workplace.

Topics and Learning Outcomes

A series of practical exercises will give delegates hands-on experience to build confidence working with raster and vector data. You will learn how to:

Navigate the QGIS user-interface, including setting map projection

Set up a QGIS project and data management process

Obtain and integrate a range of (base) map data and understand data licencing

Classify data and apply styles to vector data (including Phase One Habitat styles)

Create your own GIS data to represent habitats, species and other features on a map

Create maps based on spreadsheet data

Perform basic GIS analysis (buffering, clipping, spatial and attribute queries)

Produce professional maps for reports (with grid, north arrow, logo, legend)

Automate the production of maps

Apply course learnings to your own data and get troubleshooting advice
