DaVinci Resolve Pro User Group North - Bringing experts to your door
Colour Science for Cinematographers and Colourists in an HDR world
HDR Capture, Grading, Mastering, and Delivery - Colour Science for HDR/WCG
An unprecedented opportunity to attend a full day CPD workshop with Dr. Charles Poynton here at MediaCityUK. Bring your questions about HDR: we plan for a dynamic, interactive session.
Thu Nov 29th 2018 09:30–17:00 (doors open 09:00)
@ University of Salford, MediaCityUK, Salford/Manchester (subject to change)
High Dynamic Range (HDR) is widely available in consumer electronic devices, and programme delivery in HDR is commercially important. But HDR comes with challenges; standards are incomplete, equipment is immature, and operational practices are at an early stage. Dr. Poynton will present an intermediate-level course that will provide a refresher of video/HD “Rec. 709” colourspace (now properly called BT.1886).
In the light of recent understanding of colour appearance models and transforms, we extend the classic concepts of tone and colour in video/HD into the new world of UHD/4K, high dynamic range (HDR) and wide colour gamut (WCG). We discuss the “deep concepts” across the entire imaging pipeline from acquisition to presentation, and we provide practical information concerning colour and tone processing at every stage.
Topics to be covered
• Classic HD “709” image coding
• Perceptual uniformity, gamma, PQ and HLG HDR coding, “system gamma”
• Colourspaces: ACEScg, ACEScct, BT.2020, ICtCp
• The overall imaging pipeline (OETF/OETF⁻¹/SR/DR/EOTF⁻¹/EOTF)
• Display transforms & tone mapping
• Colour gamut mapping
• Colour grading; ACES, BaseLight DRT, Resolve DCTL
• Static and dynamic metadata
• Display calibration, issues in current HDR displays.
Essential for those working as
Cinematographer • Studio colour scientist • Colour pipeline/media engineer • Colourist • DI/mastering engineer • Post production engineer/technician Ÿ• University lecturer
