Family Fire Cookery Day, The Salt Box, Wednesday, 28. October 2020

Join us for a day in the woods celebrating cooking over fire in the great outdoors.

Based in our woodland glen on the Priory Farm estate in South Nutfield, join us for a family day of wild cookery beneath the trees, suitable for children aged 9+.

At The Salt Box, each and every menu, supper or event is centred around the flames. Whether it’s cooking our food, warming our guests or simply providing light for us to work by, we are never far from a fire. And yet the skill of creating fire has been lost to the convenience of lighters, matches and an ever-more-sophisticated range of camping gear! With this course, we aim to restore this ancient skill and demonstrate how an outdoor feast tastes far better cooked over a crackling fire.

Our food-filled adventure starts with a foraging walk up to our woodland glen, gathering a selection of wild ingredients on our way. We will give you tips on how to identify seasonal hedgerow edibles, highlighting the tasty morsels that nature’s larder has to offer. Depending on the season and the (ever-changeable) Great British weather, you may want to bring wellies to change into and a good waterproof is recommended.

After a restorative cuppa or hot chocolate in our woodland kitchen (equipped with a large shelter in case of particularly uncooperative weather!), we will then turn our attention to the main business of the day; lighting our fires. You will learn to build, light and control the fire. We will guide you in your wood selection and teach you to spark your flame by demonstrating multiple methods.

Fires crackling and curiosity sparked, we will start with an introduction to butchery featuring the finest in locally sourced game and fish. Then, it will be time for you to get cooking, using your new skills to create a magnificent lunchtime feast. And what better place to lunch than under our woodland canopy, surrounded by the snap, crackle and pop of the fires?

As part of the day, we’ll sit down at our shared dining table beneath the trees for a delicious 3-course feast, cooked over an open-fire and inspired by seasonal, local ingredients.

Through our family courses, we provide a platform for adults and children to learn alongside one another. We want to let children be children, learning by exploring, facing challenges and experiencing the elements of the seasons. We wholeheartedly believe that cooking is up there as one of the most valuable skills you can teach a child – not only providing them with an important life skill, but also helping develop maths and coordination skills – and encouraging adventurous eating.

Expect to head home smelling of wood smoke, with plenty of food and fire in your bellies. We’ll send you an email recipe pack so that you can get started at home straight away.
