DEEP RELIEF STONE CARVING WORKSHOP With John Davey, Sculpture by the Lakes, Friday, 07. February 2020

THE COURSE
This two-day workshop has been designed for those wanting to take the time to learn and find pleasure in discovering or perfecting ways of expression through Stone Carving.
You will start with a demonstration of basic techniques, an introduction to tools and the chosen type of stone. This is followed by direct carving on off-cuts to get a feeling of tools and material. The preparation of templates for the chosen subject and an explanation of roughing-out techniques for specific forms will also be covered, plus advice on where to start, how to apply the templates and initial roughing-out of the forms. Tips on technique and guidance will be given to help with any difficulties encountered.  Finally, you will learn the different techniques to finish your work and how tool marks can be used to enrich the quality of your finished piece.
John will supply different patterns that you can work from including Greenman and Gargoyle designs or you can bring your own deep relief design.
TUTOR
John Davey began his studies in Bournemouth, Dorset followed by three years at Brighton Polytechnic attaining a BA (with Hons).  He worked as assistant to Phillip King, PRA and Pierre Vivant at the Tout Quarry Sculpture Park in Portland, and then went on to further hone his skills working in a French stone quarry.  John has taught workshops both in France and England, and, most notably, the Common Ground Project based in Dorset, sponsored by the Henry Moore and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundations, and for the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in its Pont du Gard project, a Roman stone bridge aqueduct.
