A board room without mental health and neural diversity is a bad board room?
Does that sound an odd statement? Or like ‘PC gone mad’? Well maybe we’re not thinking about mental health and neural diversity in the right way? We ALL have these, just as we all have physical health and visible diversity, so the only board room without these is an empty one (or a robot board!). We all actively manage our health, but whilst we may overtly think about a walk at lunchtime or taking a vitamin pill being part of our daily health management, we less overtly talk about that walk helping our stress levels or that half hour with a book at night helping us switch off and get the sleep we need to perform.  Likewise we may talk about our different backgrounds or identities, but not about our neural diversity
Starting to think this way helps unlock some of the potential for business from thinking about mental health diversity – how do you support everyone in the business and how do you harness different mental aptitude, cognitive diversity and different lived experience to improve your decision making, innovation, employment offering and customer offering.
Boards can be powerful and totemic drivers of change in a business. We have seen that gender and LGBTI appointments into the Boardroom can instantly help start a cultural change throughout an organisation, but what steps do a Board need to take to start creating that change, harness potential, and ensure they lead in the area of cognative diversity.
This practical session comes with homework! In advance we’ll be asking you to skim a short guide to mental health best practice, review how your organisation supports mental health, and draft some of your own ‘top tips’ for boardroom activity (as opposed to what the executive do).
In the session we’ll debate and refine our thinking on the boardroom role, and as an output we’ll be publishing a short guide to inspire Boards to think about their role on 13 to 19 May for Mental Health Awareness week and on 10 October for World Mental Health Day, and also use those as opportunities to celebrate neural diversity.
The session has been designed by CtC members Maria Hamilton, Reena Dayal, and Neil Stevenson.
