Capitalism - The Behind the Scenes Tour, City of London, Wednesday, 03. February 2021

Join Susie Steed for a walk through a very brief history of financial Capitalism. It takes us from Britannia, to the British Empire, and ends with the Banking Crisis and Brexit.
On this tour we will:

Visit the place where East India Company used to be based, the irst company publicly listed on the stock exchange (hang on, didn’t that company have a private army, and steal loads from India?)

Look at the place where insurance markets were set up (wait, weren’t they insuring slave ships?)

Work our way around the narrow and historical backstreets of the medieval city of London (that’s weird, a lot of these roads are named after places in India, or the West Indies. It’s almost as if the wealth of the City of London was built upon theft from these places?)

Okay, I’ll be honest, this isn’t really a tour of capitalism. This is a tour of how Britain became wealthy. It has very little to do with any of the things we think of as Capitalism - like free trade, innovation and competition. Instead it has a lot to do with war, slavery and exploitation.
The meeting point is close to Lloyds of London, on Leadenhall Street in the City of London. A map with an exact meeting point will be emailed to you on booking on the tour.
This tour is a variation of a show performed as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and featured on Al Jazeera. This is a new route so tickets are cheaper than usual, but the route is subject to change last minute.
You can see a short feature about the tour when it was performed at the Edinburgh Comedy festival in 2017
