BIID Tour of Emery Walker's House, 7 Hammersmith Terrace, Thursday, 04. April 2019

BIID members are invited to tour the residence at 7 Hammersmith Terrace of renowned engraver, photographer and printer, Sir Emery Walker (1851-1933).
Walker fell in with the fashionable set of Hammersmith Terrace which had become a particular 'hot spot' for members of the Arts & Crafts Movement. They visited each other’s homes regularly and often congregated around the post box at the end of the terrace for a late-night chat while catching the last post.
Emery’s expertise and vast collection of 16th Century typefaces particularly appealed to his friend William Morris who went on the establish the famous Kelmscott Press by inspiration.
Emery also created his own company, Doves Press, after Morris’s death and became Past Master of the Art Workers' Guild, Late President of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, a Trustee of the Wallace Collection and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Emery received a knighthood in 1930 as recognition for his dedication to the arts.
An insight into the life of one of the great Arts & Crafts Movements pioneers through his wonderfully kept period home.

About the venue
Emery Walker's House is a Grade II* listed, tall, terraced house with narrow stairs between the three floors open to the public, as well as steps to the rear garden (46 steps in total). We regret that wheelchair or step free access is not possible.
Lighting levels are low throughout the building.
Due to the constraints of space, the high density of furniture and precious objects, and to help conserve the fragile collections, the house is unsuitable for young children.
Unfortunately, for conservation reasons, photography is not allowed inside the house. A selection of postcards, greeting cards, books and gifts can be purchased after the tour.

If you have any queries please email the office at info@ or call 020 7628 0255.
