BAAL Language, Gender and Sexuality SIG , Birmingham City University, Thursday, 30. May 2019

This is the 12th meeting of the British Association of Applied Linguistics Special Interest Group on Language, Gender and Sexuality. The aim of this event is to showcase ongoing research directions within LGaS at the intersection of media and technology, including work focused on traditional media (radio, television, film, print, music), new media (online forums, social network sites, etc), chat applications (WhatsApp, SnapChat, etc), digital activism (including how gender-based issues such as #gamergate, #metoo, and #everydaysexism, are represented in the media), and video games, as well inter-/cross-disciplinary linguistic research with communication and media studies, journalism, the digital humanities, and the media industry and tech sector more broadly.
The SIG will provide a forum for language, gender and sexuality scholars, technology researchers, media practitioners, and other interested parties to present and discuss current work related to LGaS research across a variety of media and technology contexts, both inside and outside the UK, raising questions of theory and methodology, the impact of collaborative work within linguistics, and the potential social application and value of such research. The event will include invited keynote speakers, submitted research talks, a panel discussion, and networking opportunities. Emergent scholars (postgraduate students and early-career researchers) are particularly encouraged to attend. A buffet lunch will be provided.
