Arts Emergency Mentor Training - Margate 1st October 2019 , Resort Studios, Tuesday, 01. October 2019

Arts Emergency is a charity and national support network programme for young people who don’t have influential contacts of their own.
We will be welcoming up to 40 brilliant new young people to the second year of our Thanet mentoring programme in January 2020 and we would love for you to join us as a mentor!
As a Mentor you'll be part of changing a young person's life by helping them navigate some big decisions.
Here's a little more information about our programme and what mentoring entails:
What does an Arts Emergency mentor do and how much time does it take?

Arts Emergency mentors work voluntarily with a young person over the course of a year, meeting for an hour once a month and helping them to gain confidence, connections and the advice and guidance they need to succeed in their chosen subject/industry
With the support of Arts Emergency and our network, mentoring pairs decide on a number of goals for the year and then work towards achieving them
Mentor pairs are expected to have one **** to **** meeting each month ideally lasting about an hour. In between sessions you may find you communicate by e-mail, skype, text etc. We encourage flexibility during busy periods e.g. exams, starting new jobs, moving house etc

How does the mentor matching process work?

We will be recruiting up to 40 local year 12 students in November 2019.
Mentor pairs will be matched before the end of November 2019. We will further explain this process at the event.  It is worth noting that we endeavour to match as many mentors as we can, but occasionally we are not able to find a student with an interest in the area trained mentors specialise in and are therefore unable to guarantee you a mentee in the 19/20 cohort.
When allocated a mentee, you will be asked to undergo an enhanced DBS check, (paid for by Arts Emergency).
Mentor pairs will be introduced for the first time at our introductory event, taking place in late January 2020.
Mentoring relationships last one full calendar year, January - January. This means you will be there to support your mentee in the run up to Year 12 mock exams, throughout their summer break between Years 12 and 13 where they might be looking for work experience, and into Year 13 when many will be drafting their UCAS statements and thinking about university.

What are Arts Emergency looking for in a prospective mentor?

Our mentors are all different which is what we love, we particularly welcome mentors who identify as LGBTQ+ and/or are from BAME backgrounds
Mentors should be able to relate well to people, are good at problem solving or talking though issues, reliable and committed and able to provide insight from their personal experiences.
Most of our mentors have studied an arts or humanities subject at university level and/or work in the creative industries.
Below is a list of the areas that our mentors have focussed on throughout 17/18.

Architecture - Animation - Fashion -  Comedy - Journalism - Politics & Activism - Academia - Dance - Marketing - Psychology - Acting - Music -  English Lit/Lang - Interior Design - Museums - Publishing - Art & Design - Film & TV  - Sociology - Art History - Games Design - Philosophy - Theatre - Music Tech - Classics - History - Photography - Writing -
