25th Anniversary: Centre for Colonial & Postcolonial Studies with Fred D'Aguiar, Templeman Lecture Theatre, Friday, 12. June 2020

Join us to celebrate 25 years of the University of Kent's Centre for Colonial & Postcolonial Studies!
Founded in 1994 by Lyn Innes, Rod Edmond and Abdulrazak Gurnah, the Centre was one of the first of its kind in the UK, offering a vibrant and vital intervention into the study of literature and culture. Many leading scholars in the field of postcolonial studies started out as students at Kent, and the Centre's international reach is felt most distinctly through the establishment of the Routledge Research in Postcolonial Literatures series. In both its teaching and research activities, the Centre has fostered an impressive variety of voices, perspectives and interests, and it will continue to do so for another 25 years and more!
To celebrate this milestone, we’ll be joined by the founding members who will discuss the social, political and scholarly climate that led to the Centre's formation.
We’re also delighted to be welcoming the poet, novelist, playwright and Kent alumnus Fred D’Aguiar as our keynote speaker.
After receiving a First in African and Caribbean Studies at the University of Kent in 1985, Fred went on to publish his collection, **** Dot (1985), which established his reputation as one of the finest British poets of his generation. He has since gained great acclaim and a multitude of awards for his work which often focuses on the history of transatlantic slavery and its legacies for both the Caribbean and diasporic communties in Britain, including Sweet Thames (1992), The Longest Memory (1994), Feeding the Ghosts (1997) and Mr Reasonable (2015). Fred is Professor and Head of Creative Writing at UCLA.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception. Free entry. All welcome!
